Steam and the rotary printing press

Did you know that the first printed item in history was the Bible? It's true! On today's episode of Steam Culture, Brent will be looking at how the invention of the steam engine in 1775 created new printing press technology for the 1800s. Using the power of steam, they went from printing thousands of pages a day to millions.

Here are a few quick tips from the video:

  • In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg developed the first printing press
  • In the 1800s, the first steam-powered press came into play
  • The steam powered printing press owes its roots to the invention of the steam engine by James Watt in 1775
  • In 1843, Richard Hoe created the first steam-powered rotary press
