Back to School at Boiler U

School is back in session for students around the world. At WARE’s Boiler University, we love the chance to educate learners of all ages and skill levels through hands-on courses that are engaging and fun.

WHY CONTINUING ED MATTERS

When you’ve got mechanical aptitude in a field like the boiler industry, it’s easy to get caught up in the technical stuff you have to handle every day. But just because you’re an expert doesn’t mean you shouldn’t constantly be revisiting what you know about the basics. The truth is that the mechanics of boilers aren’t necessarily intuitive, and it’s critical that you stay proficient at all levels.

Boiler University makes that simple. There’s a lot of information that’s accessible on the internet, but there’s no one to curate that information and verify if it’s current and helpful. With a Boiler University instructor, you’ve got total access to someone who not only knows their stuff, but who is able to explain the hows and whys behind all things boilers.

HOW WE TEACH

At Boiler U, we teach based on decades of real-world experience in the field that you can’t find anywhere else. Most importantly, we teach the way people want to learn. That means not reading straight from a book to educate. We understand that our students like to learn by doing, and we’re here to support and guide them through that learning process.

In fact, the hands-on nature of our learning experience is what one student says she enjoyed most, stating, “It makes a big difference to be able to apply what you’re learning to the equipment.”

We’re committed to going above and beyond what other programs are doing, which is why we dive so far into the chemistry and mechanics behind boilers, providing unparalleled hands-on time working in the science of combustion.

And because so many of our students need helpful takeaways they can look at as-needed, all of our manuals and specialized documentation are digital, customizable and easily accessible from a Kindle or other device.

We believe our students deserve an unmatched learning experience, and we deliver.

WHO IS BOILER UNIVERSITY RIGHT FOR?

A typical Boiler University class size ranges from 15 to 20 students. Many of our introductory courses are taught in a seminar-style, where we lay down a foundation for people who are brand-new to the industry. Some of the more advanced classes, including those at the engineering level, have smaller groups to allow for more one-on-one time with students.

We welcome anyone and everyone into our classes, and are proud to teach manufacturers, operations, engineers and more. If you’re interested in or responsible for the care of a boiler, you’re welcome here.

WHICH CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

There’s something for everyone at Boiler University. Our classes range from 101 for beginners to 304 for an in-depth discussion of types of level controls and indicators. No matter your skill level, we’ve got you covered.

If you’re looking for a little bit of everything, our 201 course is a great place to get exposure to all the fundamental boiler theories and how they’re applied in the boiler room. Our classes are uniquely structured to allow time to go into detail based on what students need, and we have the ability to shift gears from the most basic concepts to the most complex processes.

While a typical training day runs from 6 to 8 hours, courses are designed to be fun and engaging. Most classes are taught in hour increments with bite-size chunks of digestible information. As another Boiler U student fondly stated, “It’s the best training I’ve ever experienced.”

BOILER UNIVERSITY ON THE ROAD

We’re committed to education. That’s why, when our students request it, we can take Boiler University on the road and tailor our curriculum to the equipment you have onsite. Whether you need a quick, 4-hour training session or an in-depth, three day crash course, we deliver. In fact, Boiler University teaches between 30 and 40 custom classes a year in cities all across the United States.

A CAREER IN THE BOILER INDUSTRY

The boiler industry is expansive, and there’s a higher need than ever for up-and-coming qualified professionals to step into these roles. The truth is that the need is so great that a skilled boiler technician will likely never struggle to find employment.

But working with boilers isn’t for everyone. Boiler U instructor Jude warns that the job can run for more than 8 hours a day and is a very demand-based job. He explains that when the equipment is down, boiler technicians will have to stay on the job until the boiler is running again. However, he explains that if someone is willing to put that time in, it’s a potentially life-changing opportunity.

Instructor Scotty supplements that with his own story of finding the boiler industry after working in construction for most of his life. He contrasts the low-pay of the construction industry with the incredible opportunities that have opened up for him since beginning in the boiler industry. He states, “if you show up every day and you’re willing to work, pay is only going to keep going up. You might work more hours in this industry, but you’re truly going to get paid for it.”

And they’re right. Statistics indicate that boiler technicians may be some of the highest-paid blue collar workers, right up there with professionals who work on aircraft engines.

And beyond the pay, both Scotty and Jude enthusiastically explain how cool it is to be able to see behind the scenes of daily operations when you work on boilers. They say that the unique perspective it gives you is just one of the countless rewards this lucrative and in-demand job offers.
