How often should you test a low water cutoff?

The blowdown method should be done daily while the boiler is firing. A slow drain test, which more accurately simulates real water loss, should be done monthly or when rotating boilers.

What is the difference between a blowdown test and a slow drain test for a low water cutoff?

A blowdown test flushes the float chamber and verifies the switch trips, but the steam pressure can force the float down masking a binding issue. A slow drain test lowers boiler water level organically, more accurately duplicating a real low water event.

Why does blowing down a low water cutoff not fully test it?

Steam entering the float bowl during a blowdown forces the float down mechanically, so a float with a slight bind or resistance may still trip — but might not trip under normal water-loss conditions.

Can you test an auxiliary low water cutoff with a blowdown?

Not reliably if the auxiliary probe is in the boiler shell rather than the float column. A slow drain test is the only practical way to verify the auxiliary cutoff trips at the correct level.

What does blowing down a low water cutoff actually accomplish?

It verifies the safety switch trips and scours silt and sediment from the float bowl, keeping internal connections clear and preventing buildup that could cause the float to stick.
