Cooling Railcars with Steam - Steam Culture

We learned last week on Steam Culture about how steam was used to heat rail cars, this week is all about cooling them.

The steam injection comes into play with the cooling of the rail cars. Huge blocks of ice were originally used with fans to force the cool air through vents. This method then progressed to using a steam injection system. Simply put steam is injected into a tank of water creating low pressure. This low pressure causes the water to boil off the heat leaving 50 degree water to circulate into radiators.
