Steam Relief Valves - Boiling Point

Today Ritchie is with Alvin Kennison (Valve Shop Technician) in the Valve Shop to talk about the importance of the relief valve. The purpose of the relief valve is to ensure the boiler does not over pressurize and explode. Once the boiler reaches a predetermined pressure, the valve should open up and release the liquid.

If the drain valve is not properly installed, it can cause the the relief valve to corrode and seal shut. Install a weather hood, remove the drain plug and put something in the discharge elbow so that any material or weather that gets inside won't stay and corrode the equipment.

The pop off valve has a bleed hole that if steam or water is coming out, it is the first indicator that something could be wrong with the relief system.
